A Rare Hepplewhite (Federal) Mahogany 1 Drawer Stand with carved Tray Top, probably Newport, late 18th century
This is a very rare form given the carved tray top. The mode of construction, i.e. the one-piece apron surrounding the drawer, is a typical Newport feature, incorporating the corner blocks as well, into the board. Also, the sharp, magnificently executed dovetail is also indicative of Newport work. The table is rather low, as are most Newport pieces of this period and the brass handle is original. This chair is in magnificent condition with no repairs or alterations. It retains an old historic surface. This piece is transitional from Chippendale to the later Federal Hepplewhite/Sheraton styles, given the tapered leg. However, the lack of inlay and cuffs at the bottom of the feet show an earlier Chippendale look.
