Small Folio. 11.5" x 8" inches (LxB). Pp. (14), 120, (4), 50,(2), 55-83, (1) pages. Fine original contemporary full paneled calf leather boards, spine sympathetically rebacked in antique style, using matching brown calf leather with 5 raised bands, gilt lettering in compartments. Rare first edition, three parts in one volume, Sylva, Pomona, and Kalendarium Hortense with separate title pages, titles printed in red and black, title vignette, errata leaf at end [Wing, E3516]. RARE FIRST EDITION. The first official production of the Royal Society. Evelyn wrote in protest against the widespread destruction of forests for the fuelling of furnaces used in the production of iron and glass. The work was well-received and resulted in an increase in reforestation. Sylva was long a standard authority. Kalendarium Hortense was reprinted separately many times, and was Evelyn's most popular work. Garrison-Morton 145.51; Hunt 296; Norman 745; Wellcome II, p.537; Wing E3516. A classic work. CONDITION REPORT: A rare book in original contemporary full fine calf leather boards, spine sympathetically rebacked in antique style (See Scans below), some wear/tear to covers, ends & corners (See Scans below), pages with some age toning-browning, are clean & bright (See Scans below), the binding is tight & intact (See Scans below). The leather smooth & supple to the touch (See Scans below). Note: A1-3 with slight staining and soiling to blank lower margin, manuscript directions on front blank, upper margin to title cropped with some loss of text, D3 with small rust-hole, not affecting text, without additional leaf 'Sir Paul Neile' (See Scans below).
