Samurai Sword JAPANESE KATANA Sword Signed handle & blade,stand Mid 20th Century Japanese Samurai Sword Katana sword with stand. Figural handle (tsuka) with high relief scenes of samurai and 2 signature plaques. Plain pommel or buttcap (kashira). (metal cap on bottom of handle) Intricate blade guard (tsuba) featuring a flowing water scene with crabs and flowers. Leather case or scabbard (saya) with scabbard mouth (koiguchi) featuring a decorative edge pattern, Intricate scabbard tip (kojiri) featuring a water scene with crabs amongst reeds (water plants) and bubbles. The scabbard tip matches the blade guard (tsuba) with similar stylised water scenes featuring crabs and plants. Within the case / scabbard there is a small utility knife (kogatana) with decorative handle (kozuka), The decorative handle (kozuka) features an intricate water scene flowing up the handle, the handle also matches the scabbard tip and blade guard (tsuba). On the scabbard is a knob (kurikata) with a hole in it with a cord (sageo) attached to the knob, this cord is for attaching the scabbard and sword to a belt. The katana blade has engraving (horimono) of a stylised dragon with a two character japanese signature. The blade was originally made for display instead of use. the steel unsharpened blade is used to give the katana more weight for possible practise and form training instead of having a wooden blade supplement. The katana has had a one of custom wooden stand made for it within the last 20 years of which features a covering of traditional oriental fabric. Consignee states the katana is most probably original since purchase in mid 20th century based on the collectors estate records and travel details. The provenance of the items from the family of the collectors estate detail extensive World travel, particularly travel throughout Asia with a majority of destinations being China and Japan, particular Guangdong (Canton) and Kyoto during the late 50's and 60's. The collection continued to grow until his later years and over 40 years of trading antiques amassed an extensive assortment of antiques. The antiques in the collection were obtained after service in the Australian army in 1941.The estates executor / family is in proceedings to obtain his three official service medals and hopefully we will receive more information about the estate of which we will update in listings. The serviceman turned collector is known for active combat in World War II, particularly during active service in Libya and the, 'Siege of Tobruk'. In so doing, they achieved lasting fame as the “Rats of Tobruk”. Most of the collection was sold as a complete war memorabilia estate lot at a specialty sale house in Sydney, Australia, although we were pleased to receive the majority of the Asian antique collection to be sold online.
