Scarce Antique French "Deer" POWDER FLASK - signed "B" in shield - Riling 964
Up for sale:
a classic French copper Powder Flask dating back to the 1830`s - 1840`s.
The flask is depicted in the Bible of powder flasks: Riling`s Powder Flask Book.
On page 377 we find our flask as number 964 > the book reads: "Figure 964 is a French flask of copper marked B on the throat shield on both faces. The main motif shows a swimming elk attacked by three dogs".
The charging unit on my flask has a interesting customized spout with a 3 step graduated scale which is marked 0 - 5 - 10.
This could be a later modification. The flask has an outside spring > there are 2 suspension rings present.
Statistics: the overall length of the flask is 190 mm (7.5 Inches), thewidth at widest point is 80 mm (3.1 Inches).
The maker "B" could be Bouzenet from Paris who had a shop in hunting gear in the 1830`s.
Condition: the body has a lovely chocolate brown patina > seams have a very minor widening but no splits.
The charger works very well with strong spring and good thumb piece and cut off lever. The "special" spout has a nice laquered finish.
This flask looks great and could be a nice addition to any collection....have a look at my other powder flask and related objects sales!
