MINT NEVER HINGED

BUREAU ISSUE PAIR 1055-71

2014 RETAIL SALES VALUE IS $8.00

The sale:

This sale is for one PAWHUSKA OKLA. type 71 Bureau precancel pair FVF and MNH. It is what specialists call large-holes, dry printing variety. The 1055 Thomas Jefferson coil is perf. 10 vert.

The 2c precancel paid domestic Third-Class Bulk Rate

The 50-year-old Liberty Series pair will be bright, fresh, and have full original gum. This is the only bureau printing of Pawhuska.

This is a short-lived variety and scarce when offered mint o. g. Read on to learn more about it.

Dry print precancel coils were first printed on the new Huck Press in 1957. The older wet printings were on the old Stickney Press, which was being replaced. The moisture content of the paper had been reduced from 35% to about half that level and therefore was considered " dry printing".

At that time, there was no coiling and perforating equipment that could accommodate the width of the paper from the new Huck-printed issues. Early dry printings like this were briefly sent back to the old Stickney equipment to be finished and therefore have large (Stickney) perf. holes. This momentary overlap in technology caused the transitive variety you see here.

Eventually the Bureau was able to print and perforate the coils on new Huck equipment creating the later final variety dry prints with new smaller (Huck) holes wrapped in cellophane.
