As used by many woodcarversand for moulding etc tocreate a naturally aged / weathered effect on Wood,Bone, Horn and Ivory.

The technique is commonly called inthe trade "Scumbling". Simply mix the Scumble crystalswith water andbrush on the wood and the wood does the rest!Scumblingis the effect ofthe reactionwiththe natural tannin found inwood, thisreaction / effect will look naturallyold, and can range in colour from light to dark grey to a naturalblue tone.

To use: as aguide, Addabout alevel teaspoonfullof Scrumbleto about ½ pint of water and stir,this percentage can bemade stronger or weakerto produce lighter or darker shades if required. The scrumbleis normally applied using a brush, but woodcan also be dipped. Thecolour cannot always be instantly judged,because the scumbleis being absorbed into the woodandit reacts with the tannin and the air for a further 24 – 48 hours and reacts until it is fully dry, then the wood can be either left unfinished, or varnished, oiled or wax polished etc. It is important that the wood is fully dry before varnishing or waxing because otherwise the finish can look rather dull and mayexhibit some white spots. If required morecoatscan be applied to darken the wood, but its best toleave it for 24 hours between coats.When the Scumble solution is made it can be stored in a glass bottle and used when required becauseit has a long lifespan.

Health & Safety note: It is advised to wear rubber gloves, an apronand safety glasses and to wash your hands after use.

Trade tip:Aging wood - create checking (cracks)

If you want to create some checking for authentic looking repairs, then a techniquethat is used by the trade for is towet the wood and then apply short bursts of dry heat ( hot air gun is ideal ) or anoven at150F, then re wet the wood, then when the wood dries the checks (cracks)will occur,the effect is best done on the end of the wood, because this is where the checking naturalyhappens.

Liberon wood bleach is also very good for removing the black rings caused by water (from a damp glass or bottle etc) These black rings are caused by chemical reaction between iron (a trace element in tap water) and the natural tanning content in the wood (especially on woods like oak, mahogany, walnut & cherry) Liberon wood bleach is also great for lightening dark wood or wood that has been darkened by alkali stripping, staining or weathering.

I would recommend that the wood is first cleaned using 0000 wire wool, then apply the Liberon wood bleach sparingly with a brush, then allow to dry. Check results, persistent stains may require repeated applications, then thoroughly wash off the wood bleach with clean water, I find that a sponge is ideal for this. You can if you wish add little a drop of ordinary vinegar to the water, this helps to further neutralise the chemical reaction of the bleach. Then allow the wood to naturally dry, ideally about 12 hours before refinishing. Please see our other listing we stock many dyes, waxes

The insecticide remains active to give long-lasting protection against re-infestation.

Woodworm holes are caused by the larvae of beetles feeding on the wood. The larger holes that appear in early summer are from the adult beetles as they emerge from the wood to mate. The rest of the year they are inside the wood and you won’t know you have killed them until next year if you see fresh holes appear. On furniture the woodworm usually burrow into the wood from behind the polished finish. As a general rule, if you tap the wood and dust falls out the worms are still there, if there’s no dust, it’s normally means they are long gone. Whilst some people prefer to squirt fluid into each worm hole, it is very laborious task and I have found it’s not very effective or inefficient, besides which I always seem to get squirted in my eye as it squirts out from another hole! Brushing the fluid liberally all over bare wood, and behind and underneath any polished surfaces is in my opinion the most practical method.
