I have compiled a wealth of unique treasures, antiques and artworks from Asia with a fantastic and mysterious history from travels, China, Japan, Bali, Tibet, Burma/Myanmar, Cambodia, Taiwan, Philippines, Laos and Vietnam.

My fascination with Asia inspired me to move here from England and become an avid collector/buyer of Asian oriental antique statues, carvings, puppets, bronzes and unique objects, other items have been from years of collecting and accumulating from estates, private collections and sales.

SEPIK RIVER HILL TRIBE SKULL/FOOD HOOK CARVED WOOD SHAMAN FIGURE

The people of this ecologically diverse region speak more than 250 languages and are knitted together in systems of trade and cultural interaction. Ritual, genealogical and historical knowledge defines one group from another and maintains the distinctions that facilitate trade.Life in the Sepik area revolves around the river, with men paddling narrow dugout canoes full of goods for trade, women fishing or making sago and children joyfully swinging from trees to splash down in the river. The Sepik is a gallery of tribal art, each village boasts a unique style and every villager is an artisan.

Head hunting was a river culture practice in the Sepik area. The fact that young men could only come of age in these regions by taking a head, suggests how incessant warfare must have been. The Iatmul people of the Sepik would take the heads in battle, boil away the flesh and hang the painted and decorated skulls as trophies in the men's houses. The head hunters were not necessarily cannibals, but many were. Human flesh was eaten until fairly
recently and some of the older men from villages remember tasting it as
children, they will tell you that it tasted a little bit like chicken.

The men's house is the place where important decisions regarding the village are made, where boys are initiated and become men and ceremonies to please the spirits are performed. Here the crocodile is worshiped as the water spirit. In excruciatingly painful ceremonies young men have their backs cut to resemble the markings of the crocodile, which is a symbol of strength and power.

Tribes in the East Sepik province of Papa New Guinea to this day still practice an ancient initiation ceremony. A way of testing and introducing adolescents into manhood, the ceremony is a strenuous and painful process, that leaves the men’s skins scarred all over; the effect resembling the crocodile scales.

The meaning behind this ceremony has deeply spiritual and symbolic connotations. The tribe’s people believe that the scars are crocodiles teeth that have swallowed the adolescents and morphed them into ‘crocodile men.

The event culminates as the tribe’s celebration of the return of the ancestral crocodiles: legend has it, that when they migrated through the Sepik river, the crocodiles established a human population.

As well as a celebration, the ceremony is very important in establishing discipline and testing the strength of the young males. Their backs, buttocks and chest all receive multiple lacerations with bamboo sticks, creating scars that when healed form eloids, ‘sharply elevated, often round or oval scars due to the rich production of collagen in the dermal layer.

PLEASE NOTE

Due to the size, shape and being slightly fragile, some pieces will have to be specially wrapped, boxed and insured for loss only which shows in the shipping cost, I do not intend to take any chances with these pieces, better safe than sorry, it would be heart breaking to think it arrived broken and deserves looking after.

There are a lot of retired American, English, Germans etc living here in Thailand enjoying their last days in hotter tropical climes. With being out and about every day looking for items to buy I meet many foreigners living in strange out of the way places, I also do a lot of advertising in local papers etc saying I will buy any collections, Antiques and so on, things are starting to pick up, I am getting a few Thai ladies calling saying their husbands have passed away and have items that they do not know what to do with, there is some great stuff turning up.
