Seventh bright silver glass Beaded Garland. 1930s Japan. 8.50 Feet in length, .25\" beads.

Making glass beads that are familiarto you and me in garlands such as this has an interesting history. Beads were created in Lauscha, Germany, the birthplace of the glass Christmas tree ornament. First a long thin tube of hot glass is blown into a mold, creating a series of hollow bulges at regular intervals. The tube is then coated or lined on the inside with a silver nitrate solution. Finally the tube is cut between each bulge to create the individual beads. However, by the 1920s right after World War I, the Japanese were quick to produce these beaded garlands as well. They were able to make them so inexpensively the outpaced the German varieties very quickly. Garlands such as this were staples in five and dime stores across America. Woolworth\'s, Kresge\'s, and even hardware stores carried these as the sold so well.

SORRY FOR TERRRIBLE PHOTOGRAPHS... SOMETHING WENT ARWAY. THIS GARLAND IS BRIGHT AND REALLY A BEAUTIFUL SILVER.

Each bead is silvered inside, and not lacquered, so a beautiful silver color emerges.

Each individual bead is .25\" in diameter.

Length is 8.50\" (beads only) and I measure quite liberally.

I know there are a few broken beads here and there, but that is part of its history and we never removed them from the garland. Easily done if the next care-taker wishes to do so. These aregarlands which we have not used since 2007, the last year we decorated for our annual Open House which we held for Charity two days after Christmas.
