This is an amazing brand new well carved dance wand, which can be immediately identified as the Shango or Sango due to the flat double blades thunder axe. Shango was - and in some parts of Africa and the West Indies is still viewed as the god of thunder. It was/is believed that he had magical powers and could control thunder. Around the seventieth century, Shango was the fourth king of the Yoruba people, the Oyo state. The dance wand is a very important ritual object favoured by devotees of Shango. This particular wand has cowrie shells carved into the apex.During Shango’s annual festival, women would sing praise songs (oriki), priests and devotees wave their wand and dance to the beats played on drums such as the bata drum. This is a fantastic Shango wand, which would be a great addition to a Shango shrine or for collectors of African art.
