20TH CENTURY COLLECTABLES...TOMORROW\'S EXPENSIVE ANTIQUES AT TODAY\'S COLLECTABLE PRICES DescriptionSHELLEY \'WILDFLOWERS\' 35-PIECE ENGLISH AFTERNOON TEA SET IN THE DELICATE & SOUGHT AFTER PINK-TRIM DAINTY SHAPE8 x FINE BONE CHINA CUPS, SAUCERS, PLATES, DESSERT DISHES + LARGE SANDWICH/CAKE SERVER, SUGAR BOWL AND MILK JUGDate:1940-1966 (probably late 40s/early 50s)

When describing Shelley the words \'traditional, elegance and pretty\' often come to mind and this very complete English afternoon tea for eight collection is one of the best examples we have seen of why that is. Unusually, this set comes with dessert dishes.

Like so many of the Shelley patterns, it is evocative of English Summer Days...and on this occasion it offers a taste of the countryside rather than the traditional cottage garden.

This is the ever popular and much collected \'Wild Flowers\' pattern, but unusually (and rarely) it is applied to Shelley\'s Dainty shape, the quintessence of Shelley china, manufactured from 1896 until 1966 and is generally regarded as its most successful shape. It features a delicate pastel pink trim on the handles, rims and footed base of the cups, which sits delightfully alongside a theme of bright and lavish traditional English wild flowers found in meadows and on grass verges.Strictly speaking, it may be better to describe Shelley sets like this as matched rather than matching because although nearly all the pieces are identical there are some minor and subtle variations in the floral displays featured in the decoration (can you spot the difference between the two sweet dishes in image 14?). It\'s not immediately obvious unless you look for it and all 35 pieces have the identical backstamp. This set came from a private home and it\'s possible that\'s how they were originally bought from a shop or the set was added to or damaged pieces were replaced.

The pattern is applied to a fabulous complete set of 8 cups/saucers/plates/sweet dishes, milk jug and sugar bowl and ALSO we are able to offer this set with a larger cake or sandwich server featuring a square eared platter.

All are modelled in delicate English fine bone china.DETAILS

Condition: This is a surviving example of early post-War Shelley and probably 60+ years old. It has obviously been well looked-after because it remains in remarkably good condition and retains its bright colouring and healthy glaze. We\'ve checked it over in bright natural light from all angles and we cannot see any chips or cracks...just a few very small knife mark-like abrasions on the plates here and there and the usual specs of firing grit in the glaze here and there.

Pricing? Please note that rather than maximise our prices by always selling Shelley as seperate items like many sellers, we try to keep our pieces together as sets as they were meant to be, but it relies on buyers wishing to do the same. We have been selling Shelley for nearly five years and as it\'s become harder and harder to find sets like this the price at sale has rocketed. Shelley is hot and scarce so if you like it grab it while you can.

We try to get potential buyers as close to our items as possible through our images as well as descriptions so please study the photographs carefully. We are always pleased to answer questions and encourage shoppers to checkout our Trading Terms before buying.

Shipping: We only pass on what the Post Office or courier charges us.If you are an overseas buyer please ask us for a shipping estimate before offerding or buying. Please note that we pack very carefully have shipped many Shelley sets around the World without mishap.

This COLLECTORLINKS shop is run by Gill Jefferson and husband John, who live in Yorkshire, England.

it has developed out of a shared passion for 20th Century Design and in particular the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods and the exciting so-called \'Retro\' period of the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

We are enthusiastic collectors and everything we sell has been hand-picked by ourselves at sales and car boots etc based on its appeal and interest and current trends in collectables.

Unfortunately, we cannot keep everything that takes our fancy and that is when it is listed on . It has been reassuring to discover that what we find and like has an appeal to many other people all over the World and creates a useful link for collectors.

We hope you enjoy ing with us and that you\'ll keep an eye on our shop because it is constantly changing and there will always be interesting things to see and buy!
