(Note: additional images are located below the description)
Shown is an original & historic old newspaper, offered to enhance your collectible interest:
THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, June 15, 1780
* Siege of Charleston, South Carolina
* Surrender to the British
Although there are a few other war-related tidbits in this 8 page newspaper by far the most significant content is the back page report--set in wider leaded rows than normal--which reads in part: "This morning Lord Lincoln arrived express from Charlestown [Charleston]with the agreeable news of the reduction of that place on the 12th of April last; and that the garrison consisting of 7000 men were all made prisoners..." with more, and ending with: "..In addition to the 7000 Provincial troops which have surrendered prisoners of war, we hear there are 2000 militia. General Gates is said to be among the prisoners. The particulars of our loss we have not been able to learn."
See the photos for the full text of this historic report, which is set in leading (space between lines) which is greater than the rest of the issue (see).
Eight pages, 8 1/2 by 11 inches, very nice, clean condition.
