About:

Mid-Century Lapid Pottery Works Vase Of Israel 1960\'s Abstract Design / Form #143 / Signed \"D\" ~Dan

Tel Aviv, Israel /Company Years: (1952-1980)

*This vase has a great etched abstract design on both sides. The exterior has a semi gloss slightly textured finish and the interior has a smooth gloss metallic color. it measures approx. 5 1/2\" tall and is in great pre-owned condition with no chips, cracks, or breaks.

The vase was manufactured in the ceramics company Lapid Pottery Works in Israel. The art director was Elisabeth Cohen-Silverschmidt, a German immigrant. In 1952, Dr. Bertha Rosenthal set up a department for hand-painted household ceramics in the Lapid factory in Tel Aviv-Jaffa. The objects manufactured at Lapid were hand-painted, mostly by women, as piecework. In order to demonstrate how much money was due, each completed item was signed on the base by the worker. In this case, the vase is marked \"D\"for Dan, one of the few, if only men working at the company.

Lapid -Founded in 1951 in Haifa by Kurt Mossberg, Lapid was originally founded as a producer of porcelain items for the bathroom. With such large ovens, the owner decided to increase production and introduce a line of other useful items, such as dishes. In 1952, the company hired the artist Elisabeth Cohen-Silverschmidt to head up this division and she remained with the company for 24 years until founding the Ceramic Department at the prestigious Bezalel School of Art. The style was heavily influenced by the tastes of the German-born owner of the company and resembled pre-war German ceramics. Lapid was sold to competitor Harsa in 1958.
