Historically important Irish American Silver Hilt New York Emmet Guard's presentation sword. The silvered scabbard has an engraved portrait of the Irish Nationalist & Patriot Robert Emmet who the Emmet Guard is named in honor of. Above Robert is a wonderful spread wing eagle, below, clasped hands. The reverse of the scabbard has an applied scroll Horstmann & Sons Phila. maker plaque. The reverse also has a period jeweler engraved inscription: Presented To - Capt. James McGrath - by the Emmet Guard as a - token of regard & Esteem - July 1851. The sword has a great fancy engraved silver grip, a gilted brass standing eagle pommel, a double strand chain, a brass ferrule, and fancy eagle and liberty cap quillons. It features a fancy engraved model 1834 general staff officer's type blade. The ricasso, or close to it, is engraved H. W. Horstmann & Sons Makers Philadelphia on one side and ~ G. W. ~ on the other. The blade has great patriotic engraved decoration on both sides. It has some patina and a few spots of light pitting here and there. It is not a mint blade, but is pretty nice overall. This is just a fantastic presentation sword for an Irish, New York, or Irish American collector. Robert Emmet was a participant in the 1st Irish Revolution and prior to the Revolution, traveled to France to garner military support from Napolean. The support never came and the Revolution failed. He fled the country after a warrant was issued for his arrest and later orchestated the unsuccessful 2nd Irish Revolution. He went into hiding after the Revolutions failure. The Bristish actively sought his capture and even tortured his house keeper Anne Devlin in an attempt to gather information of his whereabouts. He was captured, in part, because of his great love for Sarah Curren, who the British came close to murdering. He was tried by the British, who bought his defence attorney for 200 pounds and convicted of high treason. He was hanged, drawn, and quartered.
