Silver Smith Stamps Vintage Navajo Handmade 45 Stamps And Tools:
Silver stamps Vintage Navajo style
Here is a very nice stash from yest-er year. Back in the 1970s in Albuquerque they estimated their were 50,000 people involved in the Turquoise Indian jewelry boom Their alone..I got involved in the turquoise Jewelry boom myself and had 36 employees in my first year. The boom crashed a few short years later and left a huge glut of tools,Equipment, and turquoise and of course old vintage tools if you were in the right place..I spent every Saturday and Sunday at the Albuquerque Flea Market for many years. I bought a lot of old turquoise stashes and unique tool finds.
Here is one of my old tool finds..
This tool selection came from a Navajo silver smith from the 1970 era. Many of the Indian workers would take their personal tools to work in a metal tool box. The tools they used could have been from family members and other sources dating back many years. These older generation silver smiths were very resourceful and made their tools from found objects. They had great skill and craftsman ship as well as a knowledge of metallurgy..They knew that certain metal objects had high carbon tool steel in them and could be worked and then hardened to form precision tools with. These stamps and forming tools were made from old metal files and rasps, railroad spikes,Valve stems, and well as many other sources.the used what they could find in junk yards and around the farms and railroad yards..their favorite tool was and old tree stump with a short piece of Railroad track made into an anvil and attached to the top of the stump.
So here is an old tool box I found full of old vintage stamps and forming tools. Some are very old and the steel used was actually formed by a blacksmith on an anvil. All of these tools are at least 35 years old..as I have had them that long but how old from there is unique to each tool. Some look like could have come from the 1800's or early 1900...
There are 40 stamps and weigh over 6 pounds of just stamps in this lot.
There is also a fluted bead stamp to form fluted beads with another rare tool.
Also rare domed forming tools
This is a collection of very large stamps that are very hard to find. You find many small stamps..but stamps over a ¼ inch are very hard to find and many in this selection the stamp design's are over an inch long
I also took pictures next to an inch ruler so you can see the size of the stamps..
There is a small railroad track anvil that was formed well
also there is an old gasoline blow torch..I can not imagine using that.really shows how good these old silver smiths were ..!!! that in itself dates some of thisfind to early 1900.Probably inherited some of the tools from an old family member.
45 tools and pieces in all..
