Slavery. Virginia. Dinwiddie. Register For Emancipated Slave, 1853 For Sale
Offered is a very scarce "Negro Register" out of Dinwiddie County, Virginia. A free black found without his/her Register was subject to arrest, and even to be sold if the clerk of the county which issued it did not support the Negro's claim by producing a copy from the county or court records. In any case, this document measures 8 x 8 inches, is in fair or better condition, and is dated February 24, 1853. The folds are holding, but they are weak. This Register is made out for a 16-year old girl, "Nancy Hill (daughter of Gideon Hill) a free person of Color...has no particular mark or scar on her head face or hands was born free in the County of Dinwiddie in the State of Virginia. Register No. 85." And signed by the Clerk. Followed by another paragraph written by Charles Hargrave - the Clerk - certifying that "the above is a true transcript from the record of the said court." SEE SCANS. Payment via Paypal, though other forms of payment are usually accepted.
