Slavery. Virginia. Richmond. Register For Emancipated Slave, 1858 For Sale
Measures 7 x 7 1.2, dated January 28, 1858, easy to read, and signed by the Mayor, Joseph Mayo - after whom a bridge is named. Blank on the verso, but with repair tape (not scotch tape) along several folds. SEE SCANS. All free blacks, when out and about, were expected to carry on their person their Register which was evidence that they were indeed emancipated. The Registers were thus well-used and are not commonly found. A black who did not have his or her Register could be arrested, and we have read accounts of blacks in jail who claimed to be free but they did not have their Register. If the clerk of the court in the county from which the black came forwarded a copy of the Register then all well and good, but if a Register could not be produced the black was subject to be sold, following the usual advertisements and so forth. Not a proud moment in our history. Payment via Paypal, though other forms of payment are usually accepted. NOTE: A letter regarding a lost Register we intended to include with this item, but forgot to do so. We have therefore listed it for the next day. It is a very nice collateral piece.
