Tuscany Book offers

A large original 1731 copper engraving illustrating a Bible passage.

from

Scheuchzer, Johann Jakob.
Physica Sacra...

Augsburg&Ulm: Pfeffel, 1731-35.

Please note:

The hand colored versions of the Scheuchzer prints offered online are quite attractive and pricey, but the coloration of them has always been done recently. The only engraving in the entire Scheuchzer work that had original coloration done before publication is plate number 66 which explains the colors of the rainbow.

This original copper engraving is from the monumental work by the eminent Swiss naturalist Johann Jakob Scheuchzer (Aug.2, 1672- June 23, 1733), who believed in the literal meaning of the Bible. For instance, he believed that the Great Flood happened and was convinced that he had in his fossil collection the remains of a human victim who had perished in that Flood. Scheuchzer published this work, attempting to illustrate and help to explain the entire Bible based on the latest state of scientific knowledge, which turned out to be one of the most expensive Bible productions ever. The engraver signed each engraving and there are many signatories, showing that there was a large group of artists and artisans that worked on this wonderful undertaking.Size of the leaf with the original copper engraving: ca. 15.5” x 9.75” (395 mm x 250 mm).

Size of the plate impression: ca. 12.3\" x 7.9\" (315 mm x 200 mm).

Condition: As shown, the engraving is on hand-made, water-marked paper in very good condition, with minor evidence of aging: soiling, or spotting, original paper flaws or impurities, \"plate dirt,\" edge or margin flaws, etc. I will mention flaws that cannot be seen on the photograph.

Pictured: The engraving for sale and the title page.

The title page is shown for reference. It is not part of the lot.

Please note: I never restore or treat my prints with chemicals to enhance their appearance. Therefore, you can be confident that this engraving will not deteriorate beyond the natural aging process.
