WW1 Bi-Lingual Victory Medal. Name impressed: “LT. L. A. DAY.”
Delhi Durbar Medal (George V 1911). Un-named as issued.
LA Day was born in 1876. He was a school teacher by profession and held various positions in Natal, including Headmaster, through his career. As an adjunct to this he served as an officer in Natal Cadet Corps from 1895 until his retirement. He was a captain in the Union Reserve of Officers.
During the Boer War he served in the Newcastle Town Guard. This was a small volunteer unit formed in November 1900. It played no part in the earlier defence of the town when it was occupied by Boer forces (see image). He was not entitled to the KSA. He may have been active in the latter stages of the war in a private capacity and decided that he deserved the award. This was not uncommon among South African irregulars whose units had been disbanded.
He actively served with the Natal Rangers as a lieutenant during the 1906 Natal Rebellion.
He was commissioned as a lieutenant in 1916 with the 10th SA Infantry and joined the expeditionary force to German East Africa. He became seriously ill and had to be medically discharged.
The medals come with a large quantity of documentation both personal and military. These confirm all the medals except the KSA and the Delhi Durbar. As an officer in the Union Reserve of Officers in 1911 he would have been entitled to the Delhi Durbar. Some of the documents will be supplied in paper form and the rest on CD.
All the medals are in good condition without damage. The ribbons appear to be original and, where the medal was issued with an upper suspension bar, the bar is present.
