ITEM: South Australian Government Railways Builders Number Plate, Manufactured at Islington Works in August 1914 builder\'s Shop No. 31, for engine No. 181 a 4-6-2T Class F. The plate is a rectangular brass - measuring 9 1/2\" or 241.30mm x 18\"or 457.20mm x 5/16\" thick or 7.9375mm and weighs about 11 lbs. 2.2 oz.CONDITION: Plate is in very good condition, there are some nicks on face and edge that is normal for it\'s age/railroad loco service. The collector polished and painted face and back in red to highlight letters/nos., then face and edges were sealed with polyurethane clear sealer to prevent brass from tarnishing. See photos for confirmation of it\'s condition. I obtained this plate from an estate. The collector started collecting plates in 1945, and only collected original railroad plates, his source for the plates was from USA rails, and in this case on foreign plates he would only trade or purchase plates from trusted plate collectors or dealers. He was well aware some collectors just left plates as is. His system was to polish and wash plate then paint back in either red or black or other suitable color. In the 70\'s he took time to show me his complete restoration method of builders plates. Many of the plates on restored steam locomotives in California State Railroad Museum, were polished and sealed with polyurethane by this member/collector, who was also a long time member of Railway Locomotive Historical Society.
