This spectacular, large, visual impact folk art sampler features 2 houses and an expansive farmscape that is animated with animals,birds, deer, geese, rooster, sheep,and so much more!! Conserved in its original molded frame with ebony wash, the signed and dated 1800 folk art gem also features a central scene with Adam,Eve,the serpent and a large Tree of Life.......and to add to the fanciful appeal Eve is adorned with a wild lock of hair from the samplermaker!! The entire format and presentation is reminiscent of the exuberant federal period Philadelphia area samplers (see Betty Ring Vol.II pgs 162-173) that featured houses with visual landscapes,3-tiered castles,and animals galore!
The signature in the gold cartouche reads Ann Atack (Atack/Attick family-see Adam Attick 1800 census)) sampler in the 13th year of her age 1800. In addition to all the folky visual elements there is a verse about Adam and Eve in the middle, and another verse at top....but the house and farmscape really steal the show! The main 3-story house sits on a hillock, solidly stitched with long,verticle gold silk threads and an angled front pathway running through it.....all sitting atop a green silk lawn area that spans almost the entire width of the large sampler (appx 19x22). There is a strawberry border around the entire sampler, and the original frame with its old bubble glass is a wonderful exclamation point. With a modest wholesale reserve, this is a must for collectors who love visual impact folk art samplers that are sure to turn heads!!
