Staffordshire Pearlware Prattware ~ Farming Symbols ~ Painted Mug C1800 Nr:
English Staffordshire Pearlware Prattware Mug c1800
~ Farm Implements ~ Agriculture ~ Sheaf of Corn ~
3 3/4" high ~ about 2 3/4" across the lip
An early English Staffordshire mug with raised foot and two incised stripes around the center and another at the rim, the rim is painted in two stripes of brown. It is decorated on both sides with farming tools, a scythe, shovels, picks, rakes and the center has a naively painted sheaf or bundle of corn that also looks like a sun and a sunflower and wheat, there are squiggles of green earth painted beneath each vignette. This could be called a prattware palette but it also has the feeling of multi colored salopian ware.
A lovely and rare item but sold in as found condition; the pottery is toned greyish and could be professionally cleaned to brighten it up, there's one long hairline from the rim and some chips around both rims, see all the pics for details. The handle is in fine shape, never off.
