Made in 1914 at the outbreak of World War I this patriotic sterling silver thimble was made by the Charles Horner company for for G. W. Hatton & Co. of Birmingham. The thimble has a plain knurled top and a border of three enamelled bands in red, white and blue. The flat rim is engraved "A STITCH FOR THE RED WHITE & BLUE" and is also hallmarked:
G.W.H & Co (for G. W. Hatton & Co.), the lion passant for sterling silver, the Chester (town shield) Assay Office mark and the date letter script "O" for 1914. The thimble is in perfect round and free of holes and dents. There is the tiniest of chips in the blue enamel band which didn't show up clearly in the photographs but otherwise a very nice example of this rare thimble. Height approx. 2.6 cm; internal base diameter approx. 1.7 cm; weight 8.4 grams.
Note: A similar thimble with red, white and blue enamel bands (without lettering) was made by Charles Horner to commemorate the accession of King Edward VIII in 1936. Following King Edward VIII's abdication the thimble was sold to mark the accession and coronation of King George VI.
