Since the 1800s, silver has been used as a type of material with bactericidal properties. Using it for purification has been a practice that goes back throughout history.

It was quite broadly documented in the 19TH Century that babies who used silver pacifiers that drank from silver cups and that used silver spoons were typically healthier than those who did not – that is, those in the lower classes. Today, modern medicine has shown that it takes only a few minutes for nearly all of the bacteria on a sterling spoon to be eliminated. Clearly this was a case of traditional medicine living up to its claims.

CONDITION OF PIECE:

This piece is estimated to be from the turn of the Century, possibly late 1800's. It is in VERY GOOD CONDITION for its age of well over 100+ YEARS!

As you can see in all angles of pictures provided, the spoon has a darling STORK, drawing attention to the Pendulum CLOCK. Scroll work drapes around the figures to serve as acartouche area for engraving the name, date and time of birth, recording the birth record. Towards the handle of the spoon, it is rounded, detailing a birth weight scale with a baby figural attached. On the back of this precious piece is the words marked "STERLING." This piece is stunning! It would make an excellent BABY SHOWER GIFT, CHRISTENING CELEBRATION GIFT or a regular BABY KEEPSAKE for sentimental family value to pass on through the future generations.
