Sterling Silver Stone Top Thimble, Blue John,
Blue John Gem Box, Sheffield 1988
SEE ADDITIONAL PICTURES BELOW
Plain bodied sterling silver thimble. Crown set with a pinkish variety of the Blue John flurospar gemstone - one of the 14 varieties mined near Castleton in Derbyshire. The banded blue, purple, yellow and greyish white varieties are more instantly recognisable. This thimble was made by The Blue John Gem Box who were based in Matlock Bath, Derbyshire. Hallmarked inside the rim: BJGB (for Blue John Gem Box r), the Sheffield assay office Yorkshire Rose mark, the lion passant for sterling silver and the date letter script "O" for 1988. The thimble isn't perfectly round at the opening (some distortion caused by the application of the maker's mark) but is otherwise undamaged. Height approx. 2 cm; internal base diameter approx. 1.5 cm; weight 5.4 grams.
The Blue John Gem Box made Blue John jewellery and gift-ware but I am informed that they are now no longer registered with the Sheffield Assay Office.
