Stunning 20" Carved Walnut Wooden Cross German Black Forest Erzebirge Style For Sale

This sale is for a tour de force antique carved cross from the mid to late Victorian period. The style is German in the Black Forest or Erzebirge tradition and we can't tell if it was made in Germany and imported to the US, or made by a German carver here. The only identification is a pencil notation "No 1830". on the back. The cross is 20" in length by almost 12" in width by 1" depth. The design is three small branches in a cluster with a twining vine of holly leaves and berries. The carving is very detailed as is expected in this tradition. Five holly leaves have broken tips and I had to look carefully to find them. See photos. The wood is unfinished and perhaps slightly dusty and with a lovely mellow patina. Wonderful example.
