Stunning 4 Piece Silver Tea & Coffee Service, London 1867 By Robert Harper:
We are offering for sale a most handsome Victorian silver four piece tea and coffee service mde by one of the premier silversmiths of the period. The set comprises a pumpkin shaped teapot, a tall pear-shaped coffee pot, a 2-handled sugar bowl and a tall cream or milk jug.
Each piece is beautifully engraved with floral foliate decoration and stands on four acanthus leaf feet in the Louis style. The hinged covers are topped with superb bud finials. The tea and coffee pot bear an interesting engraved inscription to one side and the cream and sugar bear an engraved "MB" cipher in script that belonged to the original owner. The cartouches to the obverse side on all four pieces remains vacant. The inscription says:
"Presented to Matthew Bawden as a mark of respect and esteem by the men employed under him during the time he held position of Engineer at Real Del Monte Mexico."
Real Del Monte was a famous gold and silver mining town which were run by a Cornish mining company during the mid 19th century.
The condition of the set is first rate with no dings, damage nor repairs.This is a good sized teaset with both the tea and coffee pots having a capacity of 2 1/2pints (1450ml).
