I love mourning jewellery.

I love the artistry of it, the hidden meanings, and the lengths that the Victorians took every aspect of death, burial and mourning too.

This beautiful example is made from Whitby Jet

The favoured material for the creation of Victorian Mourning Jewellery.

During full mourning, a widow was not expected to wear any jewellery that was shiny or considered gaudy. Full mourning could last a year...and as no lady really wants to be without her bling for that long...the mourning jewellery industry was created.

This expanding is a beautiful, high quality example.

The band is constructed on large oval panels and at the centre is a large high relief carving of a classical maiden with ivy woven through her hair.

In the Victorian language of flowers and mourning the ivy was used to represent the immortality of the soul.

MEASUREMENTS

It is a very nice size piece and is expanding so that it can fit on most wrists.

The central panel measures measuring approximately 6.6cms long, 4.8cms wide and 2cms deep

CONDITION

It is an antique piece but it is in superb condition with just a couple of minor scratches
