Stunning Early Antique Crystal Powder Box Cherub Riding Snail Baccarat Quality For Sale
Stunning Early Antique Crystal Powder Box Cherub Riding Snail Baccarat Quality
On July 8 we attended the Estate Sale of Mary V. Zeasman of Madison Wisconsin, who was a prominent collector and world traveler. Mary collected dolls, art, and was an accomplished seamstress. This is one of the items acquired at that estate sale.
This magnificent antique press molded crystal item has been classified as a powder box or dressing table box by the glass professional we took it to. Manufacturer unknown as it is an unmarked piece. One French manufacturer has been eliminated whose wares this item resembles, with a first letter L. This leaves two possible manufacturers, one a French glass master, Baccarat. The other, a Czech maker Hoffman. We will advise buyers to offer based on what he or she thinks it is.
The piece does not fluoresce at all under black light. This argues against Hoffman.
What it is, whoever made it, is magnificent in form, a beautiful box with walls formed by colonnades of semi cylindrical prisms, the spaces between the prisms formed by three vertical linear prisms, which do amazing things with light as you can see. The shoulders of the lid and foot are decorated with the classical architectural egg and dart motif, with the upper margin of the colonnades decorated with conical beads embedded in a serpentine linear motif. the effect when bottom lit is amazing.
Very heavy piece weighing four pounds.
But of course the real show stopper is the lid, a domed oval decorated in the egg and dart lower margin, with a fanstastic cherub in a posture of repose, riding a snail, in frosted crystal beauty. He actually looks very bored, the snail of course, cruising at a snail's pace.
The cherub is executed in outstanding detail with hip dimples on sides and above the buttocks. Outstandingly realistic and pretty body form seen in the crystal, with great detail on hair and face, but what really struck me was the detail on the snail head. See the detail on the snail head skin reproducing the textured pattern seen on live snails, close up images show it clearly.
Above: Egg and Dart Motif: Classical Greek and Roman Architectural element.
Below: Hip Dimples and body details excellent: slight abrasion to side rib area of cherub seen here:
Cherub very BORED. HURRY UP SNAIL! Details on hands: dimples, knuckles. Snail Shell texture seen.
Textured Snail skin and shell detail:
Below: Double Serpentine Bird's Eye motif detail.
Colonnades interspersed with Vertical Prisms creates a lightshow. The vertical prisms make the cylindrical columns appear to be fluted. Condition issue circled in yellow. This is how it affects display.
Net Weight: 4 pounds. 7 3/8" tall 6 3/4 long. 4 3/8" deep or wide.
