Suede was an ‘ethnic fashion’ magazine, a joint venture between Essence magazine and Time Inc. It printed 4 issues, Fall 2004 — Spring 2005.

Suede magazine’s Manifesto: ‘Style is in our DNA. And we, the multi-culti urbanistas stand at a new intersection of street and chic. Our dial is tuned to the catwalk and the corner. We are fashion crazy. We come from the culture on the come up and use fashion to amplify who we are. We revel in the entire spectrum of black beauty and love the skin we’re in. Feel it.’ Perla was used for headlines, with — probably — a keyline applied to thicken up the thin stress for use at smaller sizes.

My favorite magazine of all time is the now defunct Suede Magazine. They may have only printed four issues (Fall 2004 – Spring 2005) but the magazine left an indelible mark on me and the industry.

What I loved most about Suede, aside from the fact that the magazine had an actual pulse, is the way every single word, image and article unapologetically celebrated and championed brown girls. As I watch some of my other beloved magazines make excuses about why they can’t (or aren’t) creating content that is honest, inspirational, aspirational, uplifting and informative, I’m reminded that it CAN be done. I was looking for some inspiration today which is why I pulled out my old issues. As I began to flip through them the first thing I saw was their manifesto.

Suede’s manifesto was a promise to readers that they lived up to with each issue. So many of today’s magazines have lost their way (specifically ones targeting the multi-culti demo) that I wonder if creating a manifesto could help them get back on track with readers. Obviously a manifesto without any additional action wouldn’t change anything, but I think it could be a step in the right direction.

Suede Magazine, the highly touted multicultural fashion publication, was put on hiatus today by the Essence Communications Partners division of Time Inc. The April issue, its fourth, will be its last. \'Suede\' made a splash but couldn\'t lift itself out of the red. \"We knew this wasn\'t sustainable,\" said Michelle Ebanks, group publisher of Essence and Suede. \"It was consuming more time and resources than we thought [it would require] to get to a level of equilibrium.\"

Flamboyant but not profitable

Suede made an outsized splash in the magazine world, thanks to its fresh positioning, bold design and the flamboyant fashion presence of its statuesque editor in chief, Suzanne Boyd. A high-profile party for the magazine\'s \"Fab 40\" issue this month at Manhattan\'s Skylight Studios was mobbed by an A-list crowd that included rap stars Missy Elliot and Mos Def. But all was not well. One insider this week privately expressed serious concerns with the title, saying sales to consumers were very slow.

Ms. Ebanks comments were a testimony of having to grapple with a fashion magazine\'s demands for high production values despite having a relatively low circulation level (its rate base, or circulation guaranteed to advertisers, was 250,000). Internally it was hoped a retooled Suede will resurface, with a gentler cost structure.

\"We couldn\'t grow it fast enough to get it to a level that makes the costs reasonable,\" Ms. Ebanks said.
