Super Rare Priests Of Pallas Pop Invitation 1894 Kansas City Missouri Look For Sale
Super Rare!! Here we have an invitation sent out by the Priests of Pallas in Kansas City, of Pallaswas a week-long festival held annually in Kansas City from 1887 until 1912, and revived briefly from 1922 to 1924. Festival supporters set out to promote Kansas City’s image as the “Athens of the West” and to parallel other celebrations such as New Orleans's Mardi Gras and St. Louis’s Veiled Prophet. Pallas Athene was the patroness of the festival and motifs were based loosely on figures from Greek mythology. Festivities included three parades with ornate floatsand numerous concerts and other performances. Nightly parties culminated with an elegant masked ball where guests received an official annual souvenir.
This beautiful, colorful folding invitation dates to 1894. When I found this invitation, it had been separated into two halves. I am almost certain that it was, at one time, joined together as I have tried to show in some of the photos. I only found one other one through an internet search and, it too, was in two pieces. Each half features a gold image of Zeus and each side has two fold out sections with illustrations on both sides. When open, the invitation reads "The Priests of Pallas Desire the Pleasure of your Presence in Kansas City, October Third, Eighteen Hundred and Ninety-Four." Below that is says "Presenting the Ramayana" which I believe to be the float pictured.
As stated this invitation is now in two pieces and the remaining folds are weak with one being taped. In addition at the edge of each side (thetop of Zeus'head) there is a small cut and Ihave pictured these. This invitation is wonderfully printed in color on heavy, textured card stock. Closed, each half measures 5 1/2 inches by 8 inches and, open, each side measures 16 inches wide. It really is more beautiful than the pictures show. Even with condition issues, this is a rare, surviving piece of Priests of Pallas and Kansas City history. Don't miss this one - you won't find one again for quite some time...if ever!!
