Superb Vintage Bakelite Joseph Lucas Ltd Cigarette Box, 1930s:
Here on offer is a stylish vintage bakelite cigarette by Joseph Lucas Ltd, box dating to the 1930.
Joseph Lucas a jobless father of six began in the 1850s by selling paraffin from a barrow cart in Hockley. In 1860 he founded Lucas Industries making household goods such as scoops and buckets pressed from metal. Moving on to ship and bicycle lamps in the 1870s. In 1898 the company started to manufacture automotive electrical components supplying Morris Motors, BSA & Norton. In WWI they made shells and fuses, as well as equipment for military vehicles. During WW2 Lucas were engaged byRover to work on combustion and fuel systems for theWhittle jet Engine project. In 1996, Lucas merged with the American Varity Corporation to formLucas Varity plc.
This great cigarette box is a simple shallow, rectangular box that has a simple ribbed design on the hinged lid. The ends of the box have a subtle curve.
The base has the makers name and other information, it reads:
MOULDED IN OUR OWN WORKS
JOSEPH LUCAS LTD. ENGLAND
The cigarette box is offered in good vintage condition without damage, it measures about 14.1cm by 8.7cm by 5cm and weighs 275g.
