AndoHiroshige (Japanese, 1797-1858), also known as Utagawa Hiroshige, was a masterof the Japanese art of ukiyo-e, colorwoodblock prints. The subjects of Hiroshige’s work were atypical of the ukiyo-e genre. Most artists of his timefocused on beautiful women, popular actors or scenes of the yoshiwara, the pleasure districts of theEdo period, 1603-1868. However,Hiroshige is best known for his landscapes and images of birds and flowers. He was one of the first toutilize unusual vantage points, striking colors and realistic perspective. Infact Hiroshige’s genius for landscape composition was even recognized, andsometimes copied, by the great European Impressionistpainters such as Vincent Van Gogh.

Hiroshigewas born in 1797 in the Yayosu Quay section of the Yaesu district of Edo, present-day Tokyo. He was ofsamurai background and was the great grandson of Tanaka Tokuemon who held aposition of power under the Tsugaru clan in the northern province of Mutsu. Hisgrandfather, Mitsuemon, was a samurai archery instructor. His father, Gen’emon,was warden of the fire brigade for Edo castle.Shortly before his death, his father handed over his duties to Hiroshige.Hiroshige was twelve at the time.

Ataround the age of fourteen, about 1811, Hiroshige sought to study paintingunder the tutelage of Toyokuni of the Utagawa School. However, Toyokuni alreadyhad so many students he was unable to accept him. Fortunately, a librarianintroduced Hiroshige to Toyohiro, another established artist and instructor ofthe same school whom he studied under for a number of years. During his earlyyears in addition to the techniques of the Utagawa School, Hiroshige alsostudied those of the Kano School. His apprentice work included the usual bookillustrations and single page ukiyo-e printsof female beauties, kabuki actors andsamurai warriors. In 1823 Hiroshige resigned his position as fire warden anddevoted the rest of his life to painting. It is estimated he created more than5,000 images, specializing in landscapes and kacho-e, bird and flower prints.

The print would be the perfect choice for any collector. It istruly a classic image from the golden age of ukiyo-e. It was made from meticulously recarved wooden blocks usingexactly the same technique – and with the same excellent detail and rich color– as the original. Later edition prints like this make an exciting addition toyour collection and are a wonderful way to decorate – at a small fraction ofthe staggering cost of a first edition print.
