Superboy #249 "Capital Crimes of the Chemical Conqueror!" is written by Gerry Conway with art by Joe Staton and Jack Abel. Someone or something has kidnaped R.J. Brande, the Legion's wealthy benefactor, and in the Legion of Super Heroes suspect it has something to do with the menace that the Science Police have found lurking under the streets of Metropolis. Answering an urgent summons, the Legion engaged the amorphous slime creatures they encountered and destroyed them. Thinking their foes vanquished, our heroes return to their headquarters only to be attacked once again by the disgusting monsters. Sun Boy and Brainiac 5 must fight alone however as Mon-El refuses to leave the bedside of his love Shadow Lass who was put in a coma during the last battle. Meanwhile, Superman, Lightning Lad, Cosmic Boy, Phantom Girl and Saturn Girl investigate Brande's high-rise apartment and find even more of the creatures.
As their battle carries them into the sewers of Metropolis, the Legion realizes they cannot prevail against these abominations. It's up to Brainiac 5 to devise a weapon to counter the monsters and uncover their creator: Dr. Mantis Morlo and his Chemoid! But even as Brainy saves the day, he vows that Mon-El will pay for failing his duty as a Legionnaire. Then, enjoy a solo adventure of Chameleon Boy who is asked to solve an intergalactic case of extortion and theft involving a member of the Science Police. "The Arctoraan Jewel Case" is written by Paul Kupperberg and drawn by Staton.
