Superior Quality Anglo Indian Quill & Ebony Box - Ceylon C. 1850 For SaleA superior quality Anglo Indian porcupine quill & Ebony trinket box from Matara in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). The quality of the box is underlined by the profusion of inlaid bone dots. Lesser quality boxes have far fewer dots. The original pattern of the quills is still visible - less so in areas that have been exposed to the sun - and are all intact. Inside the lid is a plaque decorated with bone dots and featuring the obligatory elephant with the place name "Matara". This would have been surrounded with blue or black felt, which, being very prone to moth attack and deterioration, has been removed. The tray is stunning and very unusual. In this type of box, the lids are normally just decorated with bone dots. In this case, the lids are similar to those found in the large fluted Coromandel boxes and are highly decorated. Four of the lids are inlaid with engraved and lac filled panels, surrounded with borders of triangles in different materials. These lids are entirely original. The other 5 lids were badly warped and as a consequence, all the decoration had dropped off or was lifting. I have reconstructed these lids, using all the original sample wood panels and what could be salvaged from the borders. The diagonal borders have been replaced with stringing which is in keeping with the original design. I have also replaced the back plates and pull rings with modern equivalents. This is a visually stunning box. Size is 12.5" x 9.25" x 4.25".
This is a heavy box - 4Kgs. when packed, so overseas purchasers should check what the postage to their country would be before committing to purchase. As a rough guide, Courier delivery to the USA would be £40.
