Unglazed POP, with no visible faults. Great condition especially taking it\'s age (approx 135 or more years) into consideration. These prints were given various names - Daylight Print, Sun Print, Contact Print, Helios Print, or \"Print on Printing out Paper\".
It is a print created by contact with the original (glass) and developed by daylight. It has been rinsed clean after printing, but not glazed.
A lot of people have a fondness for these, because they have what you might call \"the personal touch\" as they were usually created as a special order for a customer who\'d look at what was offered and request \"that one\". If it was not already printed and in a photographers stock. the photographer would suggest the client came back in a few hours - and use the time to make a contact print for his customer. A real handmade print, with the personal touch.
We have no real idea of whom the photographer was, as the only JMC we can trace is Julia Margaret Cameron - and we don\'t think this is one of hers! Oh lovely thought!
We do know it is French, the style of the model suggests around 1880 or earlier, and is a handmade print. We also know by the body shape that the model was young, possibly Arabic, and may have been a prostitute or a showgirl.
The back of the print shows that it has been lightly attached to a page in an album at some time in the past. No damage of any kind shows on the face of the photograph, and only light marking on the back.
