    During each World War, the Swissmilitary mobilized to ensure that Switzerland would not become one of theparticipants. Since Swiss military service is compulsory for all men betweenthe ages of 18 and 48, this inevitably created financial hardship for many ofthose called up for active duty. During each war, individual military unitsissued fundraising labels that could be placed on mail to indicate charitablesupport. Since those on active duty enjoyed free-franking privileges, theyoften placed these military stamps on their mail in lieu of regular postage.These stamps were duly cancelled by the field post offices. Different parts of a unit sometimes had their own stamps.

  • Theposter stampwas an advertising label, a little larger than mostpostage stamps, that originated in the mid-19th century and quickly became a collecting craze, growing in popularity up until World War One and then declining by World War Two.
