The Best Ultra Rare Bergmann Vienna Bronze Arab Artists Painting & Polishing :
UP FOR PURCHASE is this FABULOUS Vienna Bronze Sculpture by Franz Bergman Circa 1900 Austria. i AM HAVING A PROBLEM LOCATING bERGMANN STAMP BUT AM GUARANTEEING IT AS A FRANZ BERGMANN BRONZE. This casting was most probably from Franz Bergman's Father who opened his Foundry in the 1860s. Quite a few of the castings were from his Dads Foundry. In fact Franz Bergman was not a sculptor like his Father was. Franz hired sculptors to work for him starting in 1900 which at that time had over 50 different concerns making Vienna Bronzes.Likewise the cold painting was done by Woman at Home.
This is a very special casting and one not seen often at all. The condition is also remarkable with there being hardly any wear to the poly-chrome Sailboat painting. The first Arab is standing with his pallet in hand with a wonderful Victorian stick and ball Easel in front of him. The Easel is holding a near completed Canvas of a 2 masted Sailboat in Rolling Seas, also please note the detail of the Canvas where the top right and left hand corners of the canvas are curled a little emulating perfectly the realness of the casting. The second Arab in the Vienna Bronze Sculpture is seated and holding his paint brush while his other hand is holding a Bronze Vase which is ready to be painted. Between the 2 Artists is a Victorian Table holding a wooden Box with Oil Paints and supplies. All in all a delightful and charming re-creation of an unusual scene. There is some minor wear to the tops of the 2 turbans the Men are wearing. The oriental Rug is in very decent condition and is totally lifelike even down to the wear spots underneath the Easel's leg and the Vase painters foot. Really an Incredible offering for the advanced collector. Make sure to view my other listings for more items in this vain. JUST BELOW PLEASE SEE A SHORT BIO ON THE MASTER FRANZ BERGMANN.
Franz Xaver Bergmann(1861–1936) was the owner of aViennesefoundry who produced numerous patinated and cold-painted bronze Oriental, erotic and animal figures, the latter often humanized or whimsical, humorous objects d'art. Noted for his detailed and colorful work, and signing either a 'B' in an urn-shaped cartouche or 'Nam Greb' - 'Bergman' in reverse. These marks were used to disguise his identity on erotic works.
His father Franz Bergmann was a professional chaser from Gablonz/Bohemia who came to Vienna and founded a small bronze factory in 1860. His son Franz Xaver Bergmann (1861 – 1936) inherited the company and opened a new foundry in 1900. Many of the bronzes from the 1900s were still based on designs from his fathers workshop.
He was not a sculptor himself as often described wrongfully. There were many anonymous sculptors, hired temporarily by the workshops. At the turn of the 19th/20th Century there were about fifty workshops producing Vienna Bronzes.
'Cold paintedbronze' refers to pieces cast inViennaand then decorated in several layers with so called dust paint; the know-how for the mix of this kind of paint has been lost. The color was not fired hence "cold painted". The painting was carried out mainly by women working at home, a typical cottage industry.
Sensuous poses of young women in theArt Nouveaustyle were disguised by a covering that revealed all when a button was pushed or a lever moved. Often carefully sculpted animals, such as bears, could be opened to reveal an erotic figure inside.
