VERY RARE - SCARCE EDITION
RARE EARLY EDITION - FINE LEATHER BINDING
31 ORIGINAL COPPER ENGRAVED PLATES BY HOLLARTHE WORKS OF PUBLIUS VIRGILIUS MARO
Translated, adorned with Sculptures, and illustrated with Annotations
by
JOHN OGILBY, (British, Forfarshire 1600–1676 London)
Illustrated by Wenceslaus Hollar LONDON: Printed by the Author for Peter Parker and Thomas Guy, 1675 [published date: 1675]. Rare Third edition. Thick 8vo. 7.5" x 5" inches (LxB). 2.5" inches thick. Pp. (10), 317, 320, 296 pages + 31 ( of 32) copper engraved plates. Fine Modern 1/2 calf leather binding, over marbled boards; gilt decorated spine with 4 raised bands & a red gilt lettered morocco label. 1-124 (Bucolicks); 125-317 (Georgicks); 1-320 (Aeneis), 1-296 (Aeneis). The first edition in English was issued in 1649. the fine full-page illustrations by Francis Cleyn (who had illustrated Ogilby’s Aesop in 1651), engraved by Wenceslaus Hollar and Pierre Lombard. “The illustrations are remarkable for their attentiveness to the narrative and descriptive details, yet it would be a mistake to regard Cleyn as a bland imitator of Vergil or an artist lacking in creativity and originality… He is both a skilled craftsman and, at his best, a subtle and insightful interpreter of Vergil… Cleyn’s rigorous attention to detail stems less from a pedantic desire to transform word into image than from a deliberate attempt to serve a particular 17th-century aesthetic—one that that favors ornateness and an intricacy of design within a tightly compressed visual space… He had a habit of bringing together several separate, though related, narrative moments in a single image” (David J. Califf). These splendid plates, which were again used in Ogilby’s later editions, greatly impressed contemporaries, including John Dryden, who “borrowed” them for his own translation of Virgil. A classic work. There are numerous close-up pictures of the contents given below; please click on them for a detailed description (See Scans below). Please take some time to view the 50+ pictures in detail, in order to gain a full idea of the contents and condition.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgil

Publius Vergilius Maro (October 15, 70 BC – September 21, 19 BC), usually called Virgil or Vergil /ˈvɜrdʒəl/ in English, was an ancient Roman poet of the Augustan period. He is known for three major works of Latin literature, the Eclogues (or Bucolics), the Georgics, and the epic Aeneid. A number of minor poems, collected in the Appendix Vergiliana, are sometimes attributed to him. Virgil is traditionally ranked as one of Rome's greatest poets. His Aeneid has been considered the national epic of ancient Rome from the time of its composition to the present day. Modeled after Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, the Aeneid follows the Trojan refugee Aeneas as he struggles to fulfill his destiny and arrive on the shores of Italy—in Roman mythology the founding act of Rome. Virgil's work has had wide and deep influence on Western literature, most notably the Divine Comedy of Dante, in which Virgil appears as Dante's guide through hell and purgatory.
