THOMAS COLE & VICTORIAN CLOCKMAKING. by J.B.HAWKINS
Firstly I have to make the statement that I am not a bookseller and I do not know or understand their terminology on condition etc. I am a clock enthusiast and I have many books on the subject. The description I give will be my own view and therefore you need to make your decisions based on my words and pictures. As far as I am concerned books are meant for reading and provided the pages are there I will read them.
This is a superb book detailed by the author J.B.Hawkins. This is the standard reference book on the life and work of this innovative and highly industrious maker. Foreword is by Ronald A lee. The book was privately published by the author in Sydney, Australia. Whilst a prolific maker very few of his clocks carry his name on the dials etc. Instead a great many were made and carry the names of the large and important jewellers and silversmiths of the day, such as Asprey, Dent, R & S Garrard, Hancocks of London etc. The list is long and prestigious. However it would appear that all of his work did carry his signature very often in secret places.
It can be seen from the many pictures in the pages of the book that his work was unique and every attention was paid even to the smallest of details. The engraving in particular was superb quality.
The pages are profusely illustrated with his work. 257 pages the book is a magnificent and fascinating read. There is a good section at the rear of the book detailing extracts from exhibitions such as the 1851 Crystal Palace exhibition and the 1855 Paris Exhibition. This edition was distributed by the Antique Collectors Club of Woodbridge, Suffolk. This only appears on the inside of the dust cover. The Dust cover has a few small tears to the edges but is complete and in fair condition. The spine and pages are all intact and in good condition. Small amount of rubbing on the cover edges where it has been withdrawn from the book shelves. The inside title page has a signature and I cannot discern the name. Other than that all pages are clean and sound. Absolutely fabulous read and an immense amount of research was carried out by the author. Please study all pictures to see condition. Book size 28 cm\'s x 22 cm\'s x 2 cm\'s
Please study all pictures as they form part of any description.
