THOMAS LELANDLONDON: T. Longman, and G. Robinson, and J. Johnson, MDCCLXXIII, 1773 [published date: 1773]. Rare First edition in three volumes. 4to. 10.5" x 8.5" inches (LxB). Pp. (50), lvi, 387, (1, errata); (2), 516; (2), 664, (30, index), pages. Fine original contemporary 3/4 mottled calf leather bindings, over marbled boards. gilt ruled spines with 2 maroon gilt lettered morocco labels. Covering the period from the invasion of Henry II in the 12th century to the civil & military articles of Limerick. Ireland found its historian at home. Thomas Leland, senior fellow of Trinity college, Dublin, wrote a History of Ireland from the Invasion of Henry II, ending with the treaty of Limerick (1691), which was published in 1773 in three volumes. Though he consulted some original authorities, he founds his work, after losing the guidance of Giraldus, mainly on those of Ware, Camden, Stanihurst, Cox and Carte, noting his authorities in his margins though without precise references. He writes in a lucid, straightforward, but inanimate style, and, though some of his statements and comments are capable of correction by modern scholars, his narrative, as a whole, is accurate, sober and impartial, written with judgment and care, and just discrimination" (Kent, as quoted in Allibone, 1083). THOMAS LELAND (1722-1785), historian. Born in Dublin and educated at TCD, where he was appointed Professor of Oratory in 1763. Leland's frequently reprinted translation of the Orations of Demosthenes (3 vols., 1754-70) provided a model for Anglo-Irish parliamentary speaking. His Life of Philip of Macedon (1758) was for many years the standard work. Following his attack on James Macpherson's Ossianic poems in 1772, Charles O'Conor supplied Leland with translations of Irish annals in the hope that his forthcoming history would overturn the tradition of a wide-spread massacre of Protestants in the Rebellion of 1641. In the event, his History of Ireland from the Invasion of Henry II (3 vols., 1773) supported the version promulgated by Sir John Temple and others [see Anglo-Irish chronicles and Gaelic historiography]. Leland's sole work of fiction, Longsword, Earl of Salisbury (1765), is an early historical novel. A classic work.
