WATKINS - C. Curtis. The life of Charles Curtis Watkins, who died Wednesday, February 27 in Kansas City, can be defined by 3 lifelong passions: his family, his work and his horses. Born in Webb City, MO in 1915, he lived in Baxter Spring, KS and Joplin, MO until early adulthood. Curtis was always proud of his work. None more so, than at age 9, when he started his first job and in later years loved to tell about when he "peddled ice" from a mule drawn wagon for 50 cents a day. As a youth, he was a charter member of the Boys Mounted Troop of America, a group founded by the famous cowboy, Tom Mix. One year the entire troop of 100 boys and their 100 horses traveled by train to Kansas City to ride in the American Royal parade. His love of horses included breeding, raising, training and showing saddle bred horses. He showed horses at the American Royal and, as a student at the University of Arkansas, brought horses to the campus to give riding lessons. Later in life, he became a cowboy and enjoyed owning quarter horses and participating in trail rides in the West. He graduated in 1937 from the University of Arkansas
