Too infrequently are the wonderful cast iron doorstops of the \"Edwardian period - American\" (the early 1900s) offered for purchase. The castings of the foundries of old, to wit, Albany Foundry, Bradley and Hubbard, National Foundry, Hubley, and Judd Company are unrivaled as \"works of art\" - the amount and degree of detail in those era pieces set them apart from the mass-produced pieces of later years. And, here we have a prime example of one of those early pieces. It\'s a well-preserved, nicely detailed, antique, CAST IRON doorstop, exquisitely cast in the form of a standing, little girl with a basket of goodies - LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD, andexpertly crafted by HUBLEY. This EXCEPTIONALLY SMOOTH CASTING is referenced as a door stop in Hubley\'s Metal Art Goods Catalog, as Design No.: 95 - Red Riding Hood. Likewise, it is referenced in both Jean Bertoia\'s book, \"Doorstops\", at page 41; and Douglas Congdon-Martin\'s book, \"Figurative Cast Iron: A Collector\'s Guide\", at page 76. It\'s one of the GRACE GEBBIE DRAYTON, the famous illustrator of the Campbell Soup Kids (those round-faced children with rosy cheeks), designs ! ! ! ! Albeit timeworn and naturally aged, this early piece VIVIDLY retains MOST of its ORIGINAL, POLYCHROME PAINT, with its detailing colors yet VIBRANT and RICHLY TONED ! ! ! ! There is no spray painting here; it\'s ALL HAND-PAINTED ! ! ! ! Attesting to its age, there is chipping, wear, and indeed crackling to its original paint. And, where that chipping and wear does occur, it is followed by the exposure of the welcomed, base coat, or that telltale, yet coveted, mahogany patina/hue of the exposed iron, that can only be brought about by age. None of the foregoing affects the integrity of the piece, but merely evidences its ANTIQUE character. The EXTRAORDINARY AND SPLENDID DETAIL of its casting, in the HUBLEY tradition, shines through in the masterful, physical attributes and proportionment of the girl herself; in her incredibly detailed and elaborate garb, including her namesake cape and Buster Brown shoes; in the brimming basket of cakes and butter, which she happily carries; as well as in the grassy knoll upon she stands; and, at once, epitomizes what we have come to know as the UNPARALLELED AND PHENOMENAL \"CASTING EXCELLENCE\" OF HUBLEY PIECES ! ! ! ! Wonderfully LENDING AUTHENTICITY TO THE PIECE, it is APPROPRIATELY impressed, rather faintly - but nonetheless there, on its backside, with the HUBLEY Design No. 95 - see the relevant scans ! ! ! ! Rendering an IMPRESSIVE and SUBSTANTIAL PRESENCE, it\'s hefty, weighing close to 6 lbs.; and measures, approximately, 9 5/8 inches Tall, 5 inches Wide (from one edge of her cape to the other edge), and 2 inches Deep. An old, green, felt covering is still affixed to its underside.
