Tapa Cloth Coaster From Samoa, 4 Inch Diameter:
Tapa Cloth Coaster from Samoa
This unique coaster came from Samoa a number of years ago. It has the typical tapa cloth South Pacific design of a stylized flower in shades of black, brown and cream. It measures about 4 inches in diameter and has a woven grass edging and back. Here is a description that someone sent to me: "This is actually a coaster made from woven pandanus and Samoan tapa cloth, (called "siapo"in Samoan. This particular siapo is called siapo mamanu meaning it is drawn and painted freehand, rather than siapo tasina, which is made from printing the design by rubbing the cloth over designs carved in a board." It has not been used as a coaster but has been stored away for several years and is in very good condition. There appears to be some loss of the surface paint color in the brown background in several areas but that has not happened through use since the coaster has not been used; perhaps the age of the coaster is a factor. There are no rips or stains. This pretty little piece is a good example of tapa cloth for those who like all things Melanesian. I welcome any questions that you may have.
