RARE book.Wellman writes about attempts (his and others) to reach the North Pole before Peary, and his idea to go by air (in his Motor-Balloon \"AMERICA\") instead of by land and sea. This incredibly brave and ambitious man then focused on trying to cross the Atlantic Ocean (for which he also used the \"AMERICA\"). The \"America\" was a football-shaped gas bag with a steel passenger cage and motors attached (a very primitive lighter-than-air blimp type airship). Wellman goes into great detail about the engineering involved, but writes in a very entertaining style. He concludes with his plans to defend the United States with a huge air force of different classes (recon, fighter and bomber!) of aircraft, and his predictions (which I feel were very accurate)
about commercial aviation and transoceanic passenger travel. Should be valuable for adventure buffs, military collectors, historians, antiquarian book collectors, lighter-than-air Zeppelin Dirigible enthusiasts, etc.!
