Sotheby\'s, 1997. VG/NF. Slipcase set of two large softcover catalogues: Public Collection and Private Collection anda 70-page Information booklet.Slipcase is very good with a few tiny scuffs and rubbing anda small break (1/2\") on mid spine of the slipcase. Catalogues in fine, unread condition (see photos). Fully illustrated. 4to - over 9\" - 12\" tall. Slipcase set weighs 12 pounds.
In September 1997, Sotheby\'s saleed off the contents of the Paris home of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Potential buyers received the catalogues in a slipcase. The nine-day sale in New York brought in approximately $23 million, more than three times the estimated value. The sale\'s top seller was a portrait of the Prince of Wales by Sir Alfred Munnings. It dwarfed its presale estimate of $600,000 to $800,000 by fetching $2.3 million.The table at which Edward VIII abdicated his throne in order to marry Wallis Simpson went to an anonymous buyer for $415,000 -- eight times the presale value.
