"the Raj Chess Set" Limited Edition Franklin Mint Chess Board And Pieces For Sale
The set consists of (i) 32 pewter pieces (plus one extra British pawn), hand-painted with authentic historical colors (ii) a hand-painted cast marble playing surface and (iii) a wooden mahogany board-table with drawers for storing the pieces. All of these are in excellent condition and are absolutely beautiful. The quality ofdesign and craftsmanshipis evident in each painstakingly wrought detail. Long discontinued, The Raj Chess Set was only available by direct subscription toThe Franklin Mint at a cost of $2500 for a limited time in 1987.
The Pawns are approx. 3 inches tall and the other pieces range from 2.5” to 3.75” tall. The set depicts the British vs. Indians in the Sepoy Indian Revolution of 1857. Each piece is identified with asticker on the bottom as"The Queen's Forces Against The Mutineers" (British pieces) or as "The Forces Of The Rebellion" (Indian pieces). The 32 playing pieces are historically accurate portrait sculptures depicting the key figures in the Indian Mutiny of 1857. Each piece is accompanied by a two-page pamphletdescribingthe historical figure represented and their role in the Mutiny.
The mahogany wood table [APPROX. 26" TALL X 20" WIDE] has an intricate cast-marble surface [APPROX 19"X19"] that is hand-painted in a motif based on tile work in the famous Taj Mahal. The table features two fitted storage drawers with compartments to hold and protect each pewter piece. The table swivels on its base, which is adorned with brass medallions and brass toes/tips on the feet. The leg and feet can be removed, and the table will be shipped disassembled.
The table weighs about 29 lbs. and the chess pieces weigh about 4 lbs.
Accompanying paperwork includes the pamphlets describing each piece, as well as a Certificate of Authenticity from the Franklin Mint, and a six-page history of the Mutiny.
