The Sad Sack, His Biography in 115 Cartoons From Yank Magazine - Vintage, 1944
Inside the front cover of the jacket: "Ask any GI who he thinks is the greatest character to come out of the war. The odds are he will cast his vote for a little guy who is no hero at all, who wears no stripes, and jingles no medals. He is the Sad Sack, the hapless little Joe who always gets it in the end. He is the one who gets rank pulled on him, and the dirtiest jobs pushed on him. He is the butt of every corporal and every top-kick. He is the potato peeler par excellence, the always-discovered goldbrick. His devastatingly funny life in the army has now been set down in these 115 cartoons from the pages of Yank magazine by his creator Sergeant George Baker. As you read these lines, Flying Fortresses are proudly sporting the name "Sad Sack" on their noses 30,000 feet in the air. Tanks called "Sad Sack" are breaking through enemy positions in France and the Pacific. There are countless Sad Sack clubs. Petitions have been drawn up and presented to Sergeant Baker pleading with him to promote the Sad Sack. But Sack remains a private. He is the most beloved figure to emerge from WWII, and you will find out why if you look through this book."
