Binding: Hardcover (Original Cloth). Illustrator: Thomas Nast. Size: Octavo (8vo). Text is clean and unmarked. Full publisher's green cloth, blindstamped and with gilt lettering to spine, mild shelfwear with a few small rubbed spots to cloth. Tear to corner of page 477 (not affecting text) - a few pages creased, otherwise fine and unmarked internally with all 23 plates, plus the portrait frontis and presentation leaf. BAL 11826, First State of the First Edition. One of Lincoln's favorite humorists, Locke was an extremely effective satirist of the Confederacy both during and after the Civil War. "The Struggles" collects pieces previously collected in Divers Opinions, as well as a great deal of additional material, plus the Nast illustrations.
