Theo Faberge New World Egg St. Petersburg Collection #7/30:
Theo Fabergé, only surviving grandson of Imperial Jeweller Carl Fabergé, celebrates the 500th anniversary of the first occurrence of the word ‘America’ with his NEW WORLD EGG. The priceless Waldseemüller Map of 1507, now housed in the United States Library of Congress, incorporated for the first time those four magic syllables that have become synonymous with liberty and justice. Here too were depicted the first recorded image of the Americas as a distinct continent and the first vision of the Far Eastern lands. We witness the discovery of the new worlds to the East and to the West of Europe, driven by fascinated opportunity and by the prospect of commerce. Theo Fabergé has crafted the Egg in sterling silver with 24-karat gold, hand spun and polished to perfection. Entirely hand-chased upon it, the Map is laid out in the original configuration; the continents and islands are reproduced faithfully after the 500—year old original. Running rope work to top and base frames two panels in marine-blue guilloché enamel — the famous technique distinguished by the great Carl Fabergé — on hand engine turning. The finial is modeled after two heraldic cartographers’ dolphins, their faces modeled after the major winds shown on the Map. The foot holds the creation aloft, its flutes and mount entirely hand wrought. In the tradition of the Imperial Eggs, opening reveals a surprise: a model of Vasco da Gama´s great Flagship the San Gabriel in sterling silver and 24-karat gold upon a base pein-hammered in mimicry of the ocean waves. Theo Fabergé´s NEW WORLD EGG represents the summit of enduring design and craftsmanship in a glorious tribute to AMERICA. Height approx 8.25 inches Closed Edition. Sold Out.
