Theodor De Bry Engraving after Le Moyne \"Native American, Timucua\" 1591 STUNNING:
$1350.00

Up for sale is a stunning and rare engraving from Theodor De Bry\'s depictions of theTimucuaNative American tribe after the watercolors of Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues printed in 1591. This set of engravings is considered monumental in the discovery of the Americas because it was the first depictions of the Native Americans Europeans had ever seen. Originally a folio of 42 engravings they showed a strong and scary people group with tattoo covered bodies and cannibalistic qualities. This engraving is from the original 1591 printing in Latin and shows plate number 32 entitled \"How Sentinels are Punished for Sleeping on their Posts\".The body of latin text below the engraving reads..
\"When a town is burnt due to the negligence of the sentinels, they are punished in the following manner: the chief is seated alone on his chair with the most senior Indians sitting on a semi-circular bench and the executioner forces the guilty men to kneel down before them. Taking a club of ebony or some other hard wood filed to an edge on both sides, he puts his left foot on their backs and strikes them such a blow with both hands on the club that he almost splits their skulls in two. This same penalty is meted out to any who are accused of what is considered to be a capital offense. We were, in fact, present at two such executions.\"
Framed in a multi-tone wood frame that measures17 1/2 x 19 inches the full sheet of the engraving measures 9 1/8 x 13 1/4 inches while the plate mark of the Timucua measures 8 3/8 x 6 inches. This gruesome depiction is expertly engraved with magnificentdetail. For a work on paper of this age, 426 years old, the condition is excellent. Their is some discoloration an old water stainin the Latin text but the integrity of the laid paper is still strong and has been well preserved.
